Driving Sustainability in Wine

The Western Australia Wine Industry Sustainabilty Strategy is delivering a coordinated, outcomes-focused approach to strengthening the resilience and competitiveness of Western Australia’s wine industry. Backed by the Wine Industry Partnership, supported by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and Wine Australia, the program is focused on accelerating the adoption of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, improving energy and operational efficiency, reducing emissions across vineyards and wineries, and unlocking new opportunities through biodiversity and carbon initiatives.

A central goal is to support producers to achieve recognised sustainability credentials while delivering clear business benefits – lowering costs, improving efficiency and building long-term resilience in the face of climate and market pressures. Through practical, localised support and strong regional engagement, Wines of Western Australia is working directly with industry to embed sustainability as a core part of how businesses operate.

Supporting this work are Sustainability and Industry Program Manager Eloise Jarvis and Sustainability Support Co-ordinator Lucy Nankervis. Together, they are helping drive measurable change across the sector, positioning Western Australia as a leading producer of internationally recognised sustainable wine.

Lucy Nankervis brings hands-on experience across vineyards, wineries and wine businesses, alongside her own work as a grower and producer in the Geographe region. This gives her a practical understanding of the commercial realities facing WA producers and a grounded approach to sustainability that supports resilience, efficiency and long-term viability.

At Wines of Western Australia, Lucy works with Sustainability and Industry Development Program Manager Eloise Jarvis to deliver key programs focused on producer collaboration, renewable energy and efficiency, carbon reduction, and biodiversity opportunities. She engages directly with growers and wineries across the state through site visits, workshops and peer learning, ensuring initiatives are practical, relevant and aligned with real-world operating conditions.

Lucy is focused on helping producers identify practical sustainability initiatives that deliver clear business benefits, from reducing costs and improving efficiency to building resilience in a changing climate. She is passionate about fostering collaboration across regions and supporting growers to explore new opportunities, including alternative income streams such as carbon and biodiversity projects.

The primary focus will be on supporting Western Australian wine producers to achieve Sustainable Winegrowing Australia certification. A key element of the project is to overcome barriers to the adoption of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia within Western Australia’s wine regions.

The voluntary national sustainability program provides a framework for producers to meet sustainability standards, improve their practices and demonstrate this to protect businesses from changing market requirements. The project will begin immediately and continue until 30 June 2025.

Producers who are interested in accessing the project should contact Eloise directly via email on [email protected]
