The Central Western Australia wine region is vast in size, stretching over a 600km area. In terms of number of wineries, it is small however, with only a handful of boutique cellar doors available to visit. These are definitely worth seeking out. Most are owner operated, producing small quantities of quality wine, usually sold locally.
Most of the region is wheatbelt country, and experiences semi-arid climate conditions with hot dry summers and very low rainfall. These conditions are ideal for the production of quality fruit for full-bodied reds. Shiraz and cabernet sauvignon are noteworthy.
Kalgoorlie is the main town centre within this wine region, and is the largest city in outback Australia. From its wild beginnings as a gold rush town full of fortune-seekers, it has grown into a bustling cosmopolitan place with a distinctive character. It is a one hour flight from Perth, or an easy six hour road trip.
