Pour in Perth: Strengthening WA Wine’s Presence on Home Ground
How can Western Australian wine producers build a stronger presence in their own backyard?
That was the question at the heart of Pour in Perth, held at the WACA Grounds on 22 October. Presented by Wines of Western Australia and funded through the WA Wine Industry Partnership, the event brought together wine producers, distributors, retailers, sommeliers and hospitality professionals for an open and constructive conversation about consumer trends, market opportunities and how to grow WA wine sales across Perth.
A presentation exploring consumer behaviour highlighted the importance of social occasions and hospitality venues in driving wine consumption, with Western Australian wine showing particular strengths in occasions such as after-work drinks and gatherings with friends and family. This set the scene for a lively and insightful panel discussion, exploring the challenges, opportunities and practical steps needed to strengthen WA wine’s position in its home market.
For Garbin Estate Wines’ Joel Garbin, the discussion reinforced the importance of building local awareness and demand. “WA has work to do in our own state,” Joel said, pointing to opportunities for education-focused trade tastings and a WA wine festival showcasing the diversity of the state’s wine regions.
Event host and WA Wine Industry Partnership Market Development Program Manager Leah Clearwater said the strong turnout and enthusiastic participation demonstrated a shared appetite for greater collaboration.
“This event is just the beginning of what I hope will become an ongoing conversation between industry and trade. I was delighted by both the turnout and the genuine level of engagement. It reinforced just how much common ground exists and the collective recognition that we need to work together to strengthen WA wine’s position in our own market.”
The message from Pour in Perth was clear: there is enormous opportunity on our doorstep, and collaboration will be key to unlocking it.
Wines of Western Australia looks forward to building on the momentum of this inaugural event, creating further opportunities for industry and trade to connect, share insights and work together.
